Celebrity Chef, Mark Hix's eponymously named Brewer Street venue is the darling of food critics, but the basement bar enjoys pundits praise in its own right.
Bartending legend Nick Strangeway is one of Mark's great friends so naturally was asked to set up the basement bar. Here behind the low sushi counter left by the buildings previous occupants Nick has assembled an A-team of London bartending talent.
The low ceilinged is room has a bachelor's lounge feel with low slung sofas and a bar billiard table. As you would expect the cocktails are superb and the drinks menu an education to read. Hix's own stout, IPA and Oyster ale, brewed by Palmers in Bridport lead an intelligent beer list with the wines, including fortified, equally well chosen. Oysters form the base of the classically British 'bar snax' menu with chips and curry sauce a must.
