Review

Until March 2010, this private member’s bar was called The Doheny. Remodelled and more desirable than ever, as the name suggests this hidden gentleman’s club-like space celebrates rum. (Caña means ‘cane’ in Spanish.)

The entrance lies deep inside a garage at the foot of the historic Petroleum Building. Make your way past the cars to the back where a podium stands in front of the bar’s doorway. A corridor with display cases of rum leads into a wooden panelled room with an exposed ribbed concrete ceiling, shaded standard and table lamps behind brown leather banquette seating. Past the bar lies a glass ceilinged smoker’s area with a grand fireplace. This is one of the few bars in town where you can enjoy a cigar in comfort.

A crack team of mixolgists shake and stir classic rum cocktails, each of them presently tasked with creating their own signature rum drink for the new menu. The range of rum stocked here is impressive, as is the fact the bar’s patrons appear to be drink’s geeks who appreciate the quality of the offering here.

Membership of The Doheny started at $1,200. Now membership is a more affordable $20 a year.
