Review

Hotel du Vin is situated on the edge of the Lanes conservation area, a stone's throw from the seafront, in a mishmash of gothic revival and mock-Tudor buildings erected, appropriately, by a wine merchant on the site of an old Brighton inn.

Like the rest of the hotel, the bar, which is housed in a double-height hall, retains many original features. With its lofty oak beamed roof, this room resembles the living room of a modernised stately home complete with colourful mural and mezzanine gallery. However, it's a cosy home with squashy armchairs and sofas, subdued warm lighting and bare brick walls.

Hotel du Vin's trademark extensive wine list includes both predictable and quirky bins. There is an equally serious line-up of spirits with an exceptional rum and whiskey selection and, for enjoyment on summer evenings in the courtyard or roof terrace, a walk-in cigar humidor. A keen young bar team provide both superb cocktails and service. All in all, a very civilised place.
