Review

Built in 1772, the Wheatsheaf was forced to close in January 2009 due to works on the Thameslink viaduct overhead, cutting a swath through the market. Happily, this pub's frontage survived the works and in December 2012 it reopened looking more resplendent than ever. With the facelift came a more youthful exuberant clientele.

Behind the vintage frontage the Wheatshef follows the Jamie Oliver school of designer rustic with reclaimed wooden tables on flagstones and wooden floorboards. The bar and pastel coloured panelling have an air of Shaker kitchen to them. The hulk of a VW campervan screens the barbecue-like kitchen in the outside terrace while the food menu itself is like being at the bookies with small pencils provided for you to mark your order.

Give the Young's a miss and take a pint of Bombardier cask ale, or choose from a keg line-up which juxtaposes gems such as Meantime's London Lager against Euro trash such as Fosters. The spirits offering is small but top shelf, while the luggage tag wine menu has a bin for all tastes. The centrally located bar once split the public and lounge bars and that impression is maintained with the two front doors labelled appropriately.
