Four Roses use ten different mash bills and yeast combinations and this 11 year old single barrel release uses what they code as OESF, a mashbill of 75% corn, 20% rye, and 5% malted barley using their ‘F’ yeast strain.
Sampled on 15/09/2014
(sample barrel #471A at 53.9% alc./vol.) Clear, golden amber.
Char-grilled sweet corn, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar and maple syrup with cracked black pepper and cinnamon spice. Water amplifies notes of pencil shavings, clove spice and apple pie.
Toasty oak with dry tannins, vanilla, smoky bacon, maple syrup and crushed mint leaves. Water exposes clove spiced pear tart.
Toasty oak, vanilla, cinnamon and clove spice. (I also sampled barrel #471N at 54.0% alc./vol. which was slightly sweeter yet still dry and oaky with more pronounced notes of toffee, caramel and maple syrup. Both samples were very similar in style – big, bold and perhaps a tad over oaked, but Four Roses is not for drinkers seeking a sweet easy bourbon.)
Closure: Natural cork stopper
