Introduced in 2017, this Tennessee rye whiskey is made with the first new Jack Daniel’s mashbill since 1866 comprising: 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley. As with all Jack Daniel's whiskies, it undergoes a charcoal "mellowing" filtration process prior to ageing.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 19/11/2018

Appearance:

Clear, deep golden amber.

Aroma:

Popcorn, toasted oak and vanilla fudge with caramel, cinnamon, black pepper and banana flambéed in butter.

Taste:

Medium-bodied, dry and moderately spicy. Toffee popcorn, vanilla fudge, cinnamon and black pepper spiced toasted oak.

Aftertaste:

Toasted oak, vanilla, caramel, cinnamon and black pepper.

Overall:

As straight rye whiskies go, this offering from Jack is on the mellow side but with just enough of that rye signature spice. What sets this rye apart is its dry toasty oak notes balanced by delicious and distinctive toffee popcorn and vanilla fudge. This is a quaffable rye, if there is indeed meant to be such a whiskey? Before you decide, try this neat and then tall over ice with soda, preferably served with popcorn. It’s the popcorn that will disappoint.
