After the first Dutch low-alcohol cocktail competition - where 8 bartenders were challenged to develop a cocktail with just 1 unit alcohol - it was time for the second edition of oneUNIT. No closed competition this time, but bartenders from all over the country got the opportunity to show their skills and create the ultimate low-ABV cocktail.
Low-ABV is short for low alcohol by volume. In other words: a cocktail that’s all about flavor and complexity but distinguished from its precursor by a lower alcohol percentage.
The 4-headed professional jury composed of Misja Vorsteman, Joep Stassen, Lennart Deddens en Jonathan Simpsoncarefully assessed the entries. Raysa Straal (Tales and Spirits, Amsterdam) and Zygimantas - Ziggy - Valiulis (Mad Mick's Breakaway Cafe, Rotterdam) drew the longest straw and went head-to-head during the finals at the Horecava 2020.
After a sensational shake-off at the Pop-up Bar Experience, Raysa Straal declared victory in this second oneUNIT competition. Pear Up serves you a night out with friends and the well-balanced combination of sweet, sour, salt and bitters challenges your tastebuds.
"The ingredients Raysa used were all very present in the cocktail she created. Her knowledge about her oneUnit cocktail, called Pear Up, and her presentation made her the clear winner of this year's competition." – the jury
25 ml Porters gin
15 ml pear syrup
10 ml pineapple juice
15 ml lemon
2 dashes of saltine solution
Over the years low-alcohol drinks and cocktails are quickly gaining ground in the Netherlands. Consumers are more conscious about their alcohol consumption, which requires a healthy dose of creativity. SpiritsNL, the association for spirits producers, and the Dutch Bartenders Club responded to this growing trend and joined forces with the oneUNIT competition. This new way of looking at cocktails stimulates responsible drinking and serves the masses. Just as tasty, with less alcohol.
