Up the road from Portobello Market The Rum Kitchen is a trendy neighbourhood hang-out with delicious Caribbean fare upstairs and a rum cocktail bar beneath. Based on beach shack décor the restaurant is rather sparse, unpolished wooden floors and tables and colourful plastic chairs. Even the walls are different brightly-coloured wooden planks.

There is a bar upstairs with plenty of rum, served in cocktails, with mixers or neat, but it's the downstairs area that boasts over 100 varieties of the venue's namesake spirit. The bar is a grungy affair, dark and dim with old leather armchairs and wooden crates or barrels sufficing for tables.

Cocktails here showcase the bars rum collection, featuring all the major brands and some smaller ones as well. We tried a Sharman Cox's Daiquiri (named after our very own Hannah Sharman-Cox) which included Eldorado 3 white rum, peach, lemon and egg white, a Whistlebelly; Appletons VX Estate, sweet vermouth, tart cherry juice and bitters and a Lesser Of Two Weevils; Red Stripe and Jamaican ginger beer, Mount Gay rum, lime and bitters. All were fun, flavoursome and well-balanced.

The bar can be a calm spot to enjoy some of Imogen Elliot's creations early on, but this place quickly turns into a party spot and the weekend DJ does nothing to subdue the mood. An excellent spot for food, friends, amazing drinks and even the occasional celebrity spotting.
