On a strip of the Essex Road where almost every corner was a boozer but now most have been reduced to the indignity of betting shops and such like, Hops & Glory is one of the few that still survives. Perhaps because it has higher aspirations than being a mere “boozer”, Hops & Glory has been gentrified. And as befits the gastro pub genre, it now boasts the usual accoutrements: bare wooden tables, the odd church pew/bench, bookshelf, board games, chalkboard drinks menu and open kitchen at the end of the old bar.
While the interior décor is far from special, the food served here is. Sunday roast at £16 - £18 a main may not be cheap but they are amongst the very best in London, as is the delightfully moist Sticky Toffee Pudding. As for the drinks, while the star-tenders that graced this venue moved on early in 2017, their legacy lives on with one of the tastiest Bloody Marys we’ve found in London.
