Mint = fresh and delicious. Think mojitos, juleps, mint candy, chewing gum and even toothpaste. Sadly, crème de menthe hasn’t fared well in the liqueur popularity stakes against more subtle flavours such as elderflower. Perhaps lurid green crème de menthe has put folk off the category. However, not all crème de menthes are green.
So, when using mint consider adding a splash of white crème de menthe to amplify the flavour or use to add a burst of fresh flavour to a cocktail, such as in the following recipes.
Mojito Cocktail (Difford’s method)
With: Gold rum, lime juice, sugar syrup, white crème de menthe, Angostura Aromatic Bitters, mint leaves
We say: All the flavour of the mojito but without unattractive mint leaves trapped in crushed ice. This only works when fresh, cold crushed ice is used. Otherwise the drink will be overly diluted.
Mai Tai (Difford’s recipe)
With: Rum, pineapple rum, orange curacao liqueur, lime juice, almond syrup, amaretto, falernum, white crème de menthe and absinthe.
We say: We love Daiquiries and this is basically a classic Daiquiri with a few bells and whistles: Orange curacao, lime juice, almond syrup, amaretto, falernum, white crème de menthe and absinthe.
The Angel Wore Red
With: Vermouth, Campari, white crème de menthe and Peroni lager.
We say: A most unusual combination of classic Italian red bitter liqueur, bianco vermouth, crème de menthe and lager combine brilliantly in this refreshing aperitif.
Minty White Lady Cocktail
With: Dry gin, triple sec, white crème de menthe, lemon juice, peppermint bitters, egg white.
We say: White crème de menthe and peppermint bitters bring minty freshness to this not so innocent lady in white.
Delmarva Cocktail No.1
With: Bourbon, vermouth, white crème de menthe and lemon juice.
We say: A minty fresh, dry, whiskey-based palate cleanser.
With: Dry gin, white wine, white crème de menthe, sugar syrup and mint leaves.
We say: A great grassy, minty digestif with a good balance between acidity and sweetness.
Minty Pentones cocktail
With: Dry gin, cranberry juice, white crème de menthe, mastiha liqueur and peppermint bitters.
We say: Gin’s botanical complexity combined with minty and mastiha freshness and a pink hint of cranberry fruitiness makes for a cleansing after dinner digestif.
With: Cherry gin, white crème de menthe, cherry brandy liqueur, lemon juice and chocolate bitters.
We say: We do like a pun, especially a tasty pun. Sweet and sour cherry fortified with gin notes and subtle freshening crème de menthe and delicate chocolate.
American Beauty #1
With: Cognac, extra dry vermouth, white crème de menthe, orange juice, grenadine syrup, red wine and chilled water.
We say: Both fresh and refreshing. A subtle hint of peppermint gives zing to this cognac-based cocktail.
High Society cocktail
With: Scotch whisky, white crème de menthe and Fernet Branca.
We say: Minty fresh Scotch whisky with herbal complexity courtesy of Fernet Branca.
With: Dry gin, mastiha liqueur, white crème de menthe, vermouth and peppermint bitters.
We say: The perfect digestif Martini. Mastiha and white crème de menthe – both renowned for their digestive properties – add cooling freshness to this wet, lightly sweetened Martini.
With: Bourbon, white crème de menthe, triple sec and chilled water.
We say: A peppermint fresh, bourbon laced drink.
