London Battersea and Wandsworth City Guide

Wandsworth and Battersea lie, as their postcodes suggest, south west of Westminster. The Thames snakes its way along its northern border, and extends from Battersea Park in the north, through the area west of Clapham Common and around Clapham Junction station, beyond to Earlsfield and west to Putney.

Battersea Power Station presides over the area in name (though actually falls into an adjacent postcode area). It embodies the change that has beset this area of London - from heavy industry to huge post-war land clearances and large-scale public housing. Today, multi-million pound Victorian houses sit alongside local authority high-rises; fancy bistros sit comfortably next door to fast food outlets.

Wandsworth has a strong brewing heritage, with Young's having been founded in the 1830s and Sambrook's representing the new kids on the block. Finding decent cocktails is more of a gamble: grab a cab to make it to the best.
