Oatmeal Stouts used to be considered nutritional so were popular with new mothers. They stopped being produced all together by the first world war and weren’t seen again until 1980 when Samuel Smith made this version. It is brewed in the traditional Yorkshire way and fermented in stone squares.
(best before Aug-13) Very dark mahogany, almost pitch black with large buddle mushroom coloured head leaving moderate lacing.
Scottish porridge, heavily roasted/burnt grain, liquorice faint smokiness and cider apples.
Sweet porridge and dry, slightly bitter roasted/burnt oats with butterscotch, white chocolate and caramel.
Sweet toasted bread charcoal, caramel and butterscotch with faint perfumed notes.
