The most northerly distillery on Speyside, Auchroisk sits amidst woodland on the road from Keith to Rothes. The site was acquired by IDV (now Diageo) in 1970 with the purpose-built distillery opened four years later. Its name, pronounced ‘are-thusk’, translates from Gaelic as ‘ford of the red stream’, and refers to the Mulben Burn from which the distillery draws its cooling ‘process’ water. This reference perhaps confuses the fact that the distillery’s location was actually chosen due to the Dories Well, from which the soft spring water used in production is drawn.

The predominant reason behind the construction of Auchroisk was to supply malt for the J&B blend. However, in 1986 a distillery bottling known as the ‘Singleton of Auchroisk’ was released as a 12-year-old (a 10 year old with two years finishing in sherry seasoned casks). The Singleton was withdrawn and replaced by the Auchroisk 10-Year-Old Flora & Fauna bottling. The Singleton briefly returned (circa 1997) as ‘The Singleton of Auchroisk’ before again being discontinued. The Singleton name was later resurrected and applied to single malts from several other distillers to become one of the world’s leading single malt brands.

Today Auchroisk is manly used in J&B, Bells and Johnnie Walker blends. As a single malt it is only sold as an occasional Special Release.
