Pronounced ‘Tom-a- tin to rhyme with satin, in Gaelic, Tomatin translates as ‘Hill of the Juniper bush’. The distillery, which incidentally was Scotland’s largest in 1974 but has since had stills removed to reduce capacity, retains its own working cooperage. Known for producing unpeated malts, since 2004 a peated spirit at 12ppm has been produced during the last week of each month.
For many years Tomatin was sold exclusively as a malt to be used in other blends but since being acquired by Japanese owners in 1986, Tomatin has been marketed as a single malt whisky in its own right. Tomatin is closely associated with and used in The Antiquary blend which is also owned by the distillery’s owners.
The Tomatin Distillery lies in the Speyside region in the Monadhliath Mountains, 16 miles to the south of Inverness and at 315 metres above sea level is one of Scotland’s highest. The first distillery on the site was established in 1897.
