In the basement of a luxury designer shop, up a cobbled and gated street lined with the biggest names in the fashion world, and named after the infamous party-goer Tommy Dewar, this elaborate and somewhat grand venue has more than a hint of the exotic about it. But if you're put off by the sight of expensive cars lining the curb or the price tags on the diamonds in the window, you'd miss a lot of the best Moscow has to offer.
Tommy D's interior was fitted out by the designer Sergei Tretiak and boasts a Maharaja-inspired spiral marble staircase from the ground floor reception to the lower levels. An elaborate private board room that seats upwards of 30 people is immediately on the right at the bottom of the stairway, but the main bar and restaurant area opens to the left and down a further short flight of steps. The stylish decor is based on the decadence of 18th century France.
The long white bar is backed not by shelves but a huge row of blue-tinted cabinets, housing a remarkable collection of whisky of all varieties. Well-crafted drinks from a knowledgeable and varied team of talented staff make the bar experience very enjoyable indeed. With a drinks list put together by the Russian Cocktail Club, the quality of the offering is high, and based on an impressive knowledge of classic drinks that can only come from dedicating many hours to poring over cocktail books.
