Del Maguey Vida Puebla is made using 100% ripe Espadín agave, the piña of which are roasted underground and naturally fermented before being twice distilled...
I bought a bottle of this last week. My first time trying it. Not an auspicious first impression - fusel, spoiled fruit, rubbery aroma and flavor... I don't know what happened (did it have to off-gas some fermentation rot?) but, after that off-putting introduction, its true character seemed to emerge. It does arguably have a tinge of hogo funk. But the intensity of its smokiness (at first curiously mellow to me) is wonderfully complimented by a green, almost genever-malty tone. Quite enjoyable.
