Found this to be fine with Myers's. My "crushed" ice was more coarse gravel than slushy sand. Increased the volume two thirds and served in a taller glass. The drier barrel flavors gave way to a sweeter orangy flavor towards the end. Nice balance overall.
Absolutely awful with Myers's Rum, served up. I would never strain a cocktail over crushed ice with that little sugar syrup. The quality of this recipe is entirely dependent on the character of the rum.
This was excellent. Used 1/2 Coruba Jamaican Dark rum and 1/2 Smith & Cross Jamaican rum at 114 proof. The Jamaican funk was outstanding and the cocktail was nice and sour. Love the Prohibition era cocktails from Cuba.
