I made the original 1929 recipe with just the spirits and no citrus or simple syrup. It was still really good. The flavors blend together really well, I didn't expect the orange and juniper to play as nicely with each other as they did. It's a bit of a kick without the lemon and simple to tone it down, only the dilution from the ice is keeping it from being just a straight up 80 proof chilled drink!
Made with Luxardo Triplum, was mediocre. Maybe better with Cointreau, but there’s a thousand other similar sours out there to try so I’ll probably never get around to it.
Combier, Bacardi Carta Blanca, and Tanqueray Export strength sing superb together! And I might reduce the rich syrup by half next time as John's onto something here. Five stars and a heart.
Very good cocktail. Found the ingredients worked well together. Did find it a bit sweet for our tastes, so next time we will omit the sugar syrup. Increasing the lemon juice would ruin the balance of the other flavours.
rich simple. If I remembered correctly, we even shorted that amount. Felt the Cointreau would be sweet enough. We tend to like our cocktails more on the sour/dry side, and usually adjust the sugar syrup down.
