As a big Last Word fan I approached this cocktail with some trepidation. It was great! It's still a Last Word with the vegetal character of the grappa really shining through in a good way.
Be careful with the chocolate bitters. It must remain subtle, barely discernible, but it adds a unique twist to the drink in the right amount.
Interesting, posted this in a cocktail community, with DG and the Salon 39 as reference and someone asked if it was a small riff on the "Mistaken By Strangers" from Misty Kalkofen from Boston, Brick & Mortar Bar. Same drink, same ratio, just without the bitters. Served in a rock glass, but also without ice.
And it's a really nice one btw, first 1-2 sips I wasn't sure since the flavour combination is quite unique but really liked it after that.
This is a wonderful cocktail. The Grappa flavour is pronounced but not overpowering. Just the right amount of sweetness. The herbal, chocolate kick is perfect.
Definitely on the right page! A tasty Last Word riff. A quality Grappa (Domes Ruche) helps! Though finding the right balance of chocolate bitters is an ongoing experiment. Currently trying out Bittered Sling Malagasey bitters; according to their packaging a dash is 10 drops which seems excessive but my standard 4 drops did not add anything to the party,,, I will eventually bite the bullet and invest in Bob's!
