I was given a bottle of Mezcal by my sister-in-law and this cocktail popped up in my Difford's cocktail search. Excellent drink, and not just as was noted below, good for those who don't think they like Mezcal, but also for those who might find traditional gin cocktails too potent. Curious though about adding agave syrup as has also been suggested. I found this with the Cocchi Americano Bianco to be plenty sweet. Indeed for me, this was closer to a 5 than 6 on the above sweet/dry scale. Highly recommended.
Complex and sophisticated. The Cocchi Americano delivers a wonderful mix of bitterness and delectable richness, contrasting the agave and the slight kiss of smoke. The drink is absolutely wonderful when made with good agave spirits, so try not to skimp.
I am a big fan of tequila with a hint of mezcal, and this is delicious! The lack of citrus makes this very smooth, and lightly sweet. Excellent, soft and smooth tequila cocktail!
I had just a little bit of Cocchi Americano left, so I went on Diffords to check for cocktails. Seeing there was 3cl of Cocchi Americano I thought it would play more of a front role, but it is the tequila that you taste the most. There are times when you wonder where this cocktail has been all your life, and this is one of them. Perfectly balanced and highlighting the agave of the tequila and the mezcal. I used Olmeca Altos Plata and Del Maguey Vida. What strikes me is that this is a template that deserves the same amount of recognition as the regular Martini. If you like tequila and mezcal, this should be a go to cocktail. For garnish I used a lime peel instead of lemon, since my lemon was all dried up. It worked well, but removed it a bit from the Martini feel.
We like our Martinis on the sumptuous side. So we make this one with the Patron Tequila, as specified; but for the Mezcal we use Del Maguey Crema de Mezcal and for the Americano Bianco we use Sirene Aperitivo. For us, this is about as good as it gets with a Martini.
Tried this with a barspoon of agave syrup and three drops of chocolate bitters (Fee's Aztec chocolate bitters are so strong and their dasher is so bad that an eyedropper with them is ideal) and the flavour is absolutely spectacular. This is absolutely a modern classic.
