This is one of those cocktails that brightens a cold winter evening as well as it refreshes on a hot summer afternoon. If you like this 1948 version, check out the 1930 version under Casino (The Savoy). It looks like the original version of this cocktail might date back to 1916 when Hugo R. Ensslin, the head barkeep at NYC's Hotel Wallick, first published his Recipes for Mixed Drinks. (https://web.archive.org/web/20201124232424/http://classicmixology.com/cocktails/casino_cocktail/1916)
Never had this one before. Refreshing and dangerously drinkable - especially if you add a bit more orange juice which definitely needs to be freshly squeezed.
Depending on alc./vol of Gordons, which changes by market, perhaps not a huge difference. Both gins are juniper-led classic London dry in style. Gordons is a touch more one-dimensional juniper. However, if UK Gordons then this is only 37.5% alc./vol. versus 43% for Rutte. I would not buy a sub-40% gin.
