Established in 1666, the original Truman, Hanbury, Buxton & Company's 'Black Eagle' Brewery on London's Brick Lane closed in 1989. Once one of the world's largest brewers, Truman's remained independent until 1971 when it was taken over by the Grand Metropolitan Group and a year later merged with Watney Mann. Sadly terminal decline eventually led to the sale of the pub estate and the brewery's closure.
The old brewery buildings in Brick Lane still stand and the 11-acre (45,000 m2) site has become a home to restaurants, bars, shops, creative businesses and two weekly fashion markets.
Thanks to two local beer lovers, James Morgan and Michael-George Hemus, in 2011 Truman once again started appearing on beer pumps and bottles across London with the re-launch of Truman's Runner. This was traditionally the name of the brewery's session beer and the new product is a modern-day interpretation of the original beer. Runner was brewed at Suffolk’s Growler Brewery (Nethergate Brewery Ltd).
