Varela Hermanos S. A. has a history that dates back to 1908 when Don José Varela Blanco, a young Spanish immigrant, launched the Ingenio San Isidro in the town of Pesé, the first sugar mill in the then recently formed Republic of Panama.

The town of Pesé, established in the middle of the 18th century, is located in a fertile valley in the middle of Panama, where the main commercial activity of its near 10,000 inhabitants is the cultivation of sugarcane. In 1936, agreeing to the wishes of his three eldest sons, José Manuel, Plinio and Julio, Don José began distilling rum from molasses processed from sugar cane grown on the distillery’s own estates.

Today Varela Hermanos is one of the few rum distilleries to still use molasses produced from estate grown cane. The estate and its distillery are now run by the third generation, producing some one million cases of rum a year and controlling around 90% of the domestic market. The company has over 700 employees, carry out tasks ranging from cutting sugarcane on the 800 hectare estate near the distillery to the promotion and sale of the finished product.
