Grangestone Industrial Estate,
Lying in Scotland's Lowland whisky region, Girvan distillery was founded in 1963 by Wm. Grant & Sons Ltd to supply grain whisky for their blends, something it continues to do to this day.
Incidentally, grain whisky produced at Girvan is available under the distillery's own 'Black Barrel' brand name and tends to have biscuity, buttery and Demerara sugar notes.
This “most unusual gin” has been brilliantly marketed as a quintessentially British product, associated with cucumber sandwiches and rose gardens, whilst simultaneously being proudly Scottish in its origins.
Released March 2014 after a similar U.S. product resulting from a collaboration with Brooklyn Hemispherical Bitters Company. Created by Willian Grant & Sons master distiller Lesley Gracie, these UK bitters are flavoured with botanicals from Iceland, including moss, angelica leaf and crowberry.
Distilled in one of the original stills at Girvan Distillery, this grain whisky benefits from a 30 year maturation in predominantly American oak barrels with some European casks in the blend. Girvan Patent Still 30 Year Old is bottled without the addition of caramel colouring.
Released on 7th October as a UK only exclusive, as the name suggests, this 25 year old grain whisky was distilled in the original Girvan Patent Still, known affectionately as “No 1 Apps”, a distillery term for apparatus, which was built in 1963.
‘Apps’ is a distillery term for ‘Apparatus’ and No.4 Apps at Girvan Distillery has been producing ‘vacuum distilled’ spirit since the column still was installed in 1992, including the spirit which matured into this Single Grain Scotch Whisky.
