Nikka’s largest of its two distilleries, the Miyagikyo Distillery lies between two rivers close to the city of Sendai (two hours by high-speed train to the northeast of Tokyo) in an area noted for its waterfalls and hot springs. Miyagikyo boasts eight pot stills for malt production and a grain distillery (added in 1998) with two column stills.

The malt used at Miyagikyo is imported from Scotland and Australia and distillation is in using large stills producing rich and fruity spirit. Due to being situated in the midst of an earthquake zone the casks are stored just two tiers high in traditional Scottish-style warehouses. In 1998, a grain distillery with two continuous stills was built on the same site as the malt distillery.
