This book goes beyond cocktail recipes, combining Ian Fleming’s writings with insightful analysis for an in-depth look into one of the highest grossing media franchises of all time. And it seems cocktails lay at the heart of it.
The introduction covered by Fergus Fleming (Ian Fleming's nephew) touches upon Ian Fleming’s life, imagination and deep love of spirits; themes which are carried through to the end. There’s a round-up of the essentials: techniques, cocktail equipment, glass types and required ingredients. The book is then divided into 5 sections based on style of drink: Straight Up; On the Rocks; Tall; Fizzy and Exotic. Each cocktail is elegantly photographed and stylish illustrations peppered throughout.
We’re given superb extracts from the Bond novels all of which inspired a number of cocktails (40 cocktails to be exact) created by the Swift bar team. The other 10 cocktails featured are taken from the novels, including the Dry Martini, which we’re told is mentioned 58 times in Fleming’s books, and which fashioned the infamous line “shaken not stirred”.
This is a cocktail book very much celebrating the man himself, Ian Fleming. It offers something for the James Bond enthusiast and novice, whilst introducing us to a splendid collection of signature cocktails, all in the name of 007.
