Billed as being the “first beer to be based on a brewer’s DNA”, Meantime’s Brewmaster, Ciaran Giblin created this double-IPA based on flavour preferences dictated by his own DNA according to genetic profiling mapping his propensity towards specific flavours. And why not?!
According to the press release: In November 2016, Giblin had his DNA tested and analysed by genetic testing company 23 and Me. The process looked particularly at the presence of TAS2R receptors in the Brewmaster’s genetics – which dictate an individual’s inclination toward bitter or sweet flavours. The test identified that Ciaran is genetically programmed to enjoy bitter flavours, like those found in coffee and Brussels sprouts.”
Brewed with American hops, the appropriately named Double Helix, this double-IPA was launched in March 2017 as a limited availability release.

(sample bottle BBE 24/Aug/17) Clear, deep coppery amber with a thin but retentive blight beige head and spotted lacing.
Burnt brown toast maltiness, caramel/toffee, grilled pineapple and piney hops.
Full-bodied and robust. Assertive hop bitterness and the bite of the high alc./vol is softened by caramel richness and sweet grilled pineapple.
Caramel, hops and warming alcohol.
As 10% beers, and indeed PR stunts, go, Double Helix is surprisingly quaffable. Given the alc./vol. and double-IPA style of this beer we're surprised and disappointed by the relatively short best before date, otherwise it could be a beer to lay down as a winter warmer.
