International Poitin Day

Miss Moonshine

International Poitín Day was both launched and established in 2015 at an event held at the Sun Tavern in London's Bethnal Green by Bán Poitín.

The word 'International' in this celebratory day's title could be a tad overstated as "International Poitín Day" seems yet to extend much beyond the Sun Tavern itself where the day continues to be celebrated annually.

Poitín has not had an easy time in its fight against more mainstream white spirits so perhaps could use the exposure that could come with more people around the world picking up on and celebrating Poitín - if only for one day a year. So in the spirit of all things International we are thinking of our Irish relations and enjoying a Miss Moonshine, our favourite Poitín based cocktail.

It's also Mickey Mouse's birthday

On this day in 1928, Walt Disney released a cartoon called Steamboat Willie, featuring a character named Mickey Mouse, a replacement for a less successful character called Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

This was not, in fact, Mickey's first appearance on the big screen - the studio had tested him on audiences earlier in the year - but it is considered his birthday. Bizarrely, Mickey was very nearly not named Mickey. Disney's original design was for a character called Mortimer Mouse, until his wife talked him out of the name. (The actor Mickey Rooney, then a Disney child star, claims credit as Walt's inspiration.)

It is hard to imagine a world without Mickey, whose image is emblazoned on everything from theme parks to pencil cases. And, with that in mind, we are enjoying a Florida Daiquiri, one of the better offerings to emerge from the spiritual home of the theme park.
