This historic old boozer is tucked away up an alley linking Garrick Street and Floral Street. During summer evenings it attracts crowds od local office workers who drink while standing in the narrow street in front of the pub.

Back in the day this was a rough part of London and a rough old pub. The back room was christened the Bucket of Blood after the bare-knuckle fights held there and in 1679, the poet John Dryden was badly beaten up in the alley at the side of the pub and nearly killed. The upstairs room is named the Dryden Room in his memory. These days, things are a tad more salubrious and straightforward pub lunches are served up there.

Drink here for a few decades and they'll mount a brass plaque on the bar in recognition of your patronage. There are hundreds of them celebrating regulars who have enjoyed the choice of six cask ales and the atmosphere found only in a proper old boozer.
