The April 2007 opening of this gastro pub was much anticipated as it is younger sibling of the acclaimed Anchor & Hope in Waterloo.
The bland exterior may look like a cafe but once inside you'll find a warm gastropub atmosphere - in fact it is likely to be a tad loud and, due to the small square wooden tables being tightly packed in, somewhat hectic. Squeeze yourself in. Once past the stairs down to the small cosy cellar bar, an oak counter runs practically the rest of the rest of the length of the long, narrow room. Artwork strung from the picture rail above dots the burgundy walls and below foot your steps on the bare wooden floor add the both the noise and down-to-earth atmosphere.
Ale is dispensed directly from a couple of firkins nestling on the back bar while a limited but good wine selection is served in carafes accompanied by tiny rustic tumblers. No wine or any other type of snobbery here. There's a small range of simple cocktails but the Great Queen is chiefly about simple but great food.
