Review

One of the first and best-known of London's gastro pubs, The Anglesea Arms has the look and feel of a country pub. Wooden logs crackle in the fireplace of the main dark panelled room (which can be a touch smoky). The décor is slightly shabby but in a welcoming, homely way.

The rear dining area with its skylights, well-worn tables has something of a village hall feel with the bare brick wall opposite the open kitchen hung with works by local artists for sale. The Anglesea has long been famous for its food and since a re-launch and introduction of a new chef in 2014 the food is better than ever with the daily menus now printed as well as being chalked up on the large blackboard. The dining room barely houses forty diners so many prefer to eat in the more atmospheric bar.

The wine list is well above that of your average pub and offers a choice of 16 wines by the glass. All bins are good and well-priced, while the draught beers include a couple of traditional cask ales.
