At first glance Azucar, set in a modern development on the bank of the River Aire, might appear tacky chain tex-mex restaurant. However, it is the watering hole of choice of local legend and author Howard Marks. That alone is a recommendation but the quality of the food and drinks make Azucar worthy a visitation.
Inside Marks’ influence on the bar is very evident with a wall of his travel memorabilia and press cuttings set suitably close to the bar. The furniture is an eclectic mix of old church benches and pews with a pulpit turned DJ booth all surrounded by rust red walls.
Margaritas, Caipirinhas, punches and Daiquiris dominate the drinks menu, which incidentally was put together by local drinks legend Robert ‘Skippy’ Jupp and this is implemented by the talented team.
Azucar may have a fabulously stocked bar and offer some tasty cocktails but it is chiefly a restaurant serving a crowd pleaser South American tapas style food so tends to finish earlier and be more restrained than many of the more party bars in our Leeds Drinker’s Dozen.
