Younger sibling to The Local Taphouse in St. Kilda, on Melbourne’s bayside, this is liquid heaven for any bierophile. An impressive list of 19 cask beers and one draught cider changes regularly.
On our visit, The Local featured White Rabbit, Jameson, Leffe, Little Creatures and Feral Hog amongst others: the Steam Exchange Oak Aged Pale Ale was spicy and rich, with a good clean bite. There’s 50-plus well chosen bottles too, spanning most regions you can think of, and a decent selection of wines.
Although the Local Taphouse runs a beer appreciation society, owner Steve Jeffares took inspiration from the upscale Fathers Office beer bar in Santa Monica, California, rather than old Blighty. So there’s none of the, well, “beardiness” about it you might expect in an English dispensary of cask ales.
Rock and roll blares over the bar and posters adorn the paneled walls. The quirky décor extends into the upstairs restaurant, which feels a little like the library of an elderly, eccentric relative, and offers meals paired with beers.
