Review

The unusual name is appropriate since Indigo was, in fact, once an open yard. A glass roof with steel supports and canvas shades now protects drinkers from the elements and houses the main bar, although outside seating is available in clement weather.

The back bar is a mishmash of slates and old brickwork and, along with the rustic flagstone floor, helps give the place a relaxed, organic vibe, despite the rather generic light wood furnishings.

Now open over a decade, Indigo Yard was one of the first decent cocktail lounge bars to open in Edinburgh but, over the years, has been somewhat left behind by newer rivals.

The wine, beer, spirits and cocktail selection here is hardly vast, but are above average and delivered with friendly efficient service. Indigo offers unfussy brassiere nosh and is a safe bet, rather than an exciting one. Regulars here appear more interested in consistency than excitement and who can blame them?
