Review

The younger sibling of The Green in Clerkenwell, this gastro pub sits proudly on a corner site at the top of Islington's chapel market wrapped in its original baize green Courage tiles, its walls lined with picnic-style tables shadowed by a green awning. Its solid modern British food and relaxed atmosphere attracts a wide cross section of locals.

Spread across two floors, the downstairs of this large Victorian boozer has been knocked through to make one large, bright and airy and functional pared-down space. Designer flourishes are few and far between with the substantial reproduction 30ft oak-panelled bar rightly the main feature. The left side of this houses the open kitchen where the chefs cater for the gathered masses from an unbelievably small space. Upstairs lies a private room with its own bar, PA sound system, and DJ decks.

The beer offering includes two fine British ales and Cheddar Valley Organic cider but a limited bottled beer selection. The old and new world wine list has a strong Portuguese presence and all house wines are served in half-litre carafes.
