White and Church, perched at its namesake TriBeCa intersection, looks like a normal Italian restaurant at first glance, but the big pink neon sign of a cocktail glass at out front is only the first harbinger that things are more than a little out of the ordinary. The very long cocktail list is halved into "Classics" and "Innovative" sections, and you can get a Gibson or a Stinger or a Martini if you want to stay on the classic side. If you decide to walk on the wilder "Innovative"
side, mixologist Cristina Bini presents such oddities as a Black Stone Martini, where a smooth black Mongolian river pebble soaked in dry vermouth is slipped into your glass of vodka or gin. (It tastes just like a normal dry Martini, except the garnish can knock your teeth out.)

If you suspect that you're not getting enough protein, the three cocktails containing insects may help there. I passed up the drinks with dried crickets and grasshoppers, and chose a "Why Not?", which blends tequila, Cointreau, lime, sugar, and avocado, and tops it all with dried Mexican spicy worms. This went down like a mild Margarita smoothie, and the musty-papery worms with their bitter finish didn't add much more than shock value. (The insects are largely sourced from a Toys 'R' Us store.) Other drinks are garnished with savoury ingredients such as smoked salmon or Parmesan, but many were overly bitter, sour, or had flavour combinations that just didn't work. This would be a good bar for a game of Truth or Dare.
