Can be a challenge
Koba opened in April 2001, a small relaxed lounge bar in a part of Brighton that is far from the madding throng. This relative isolation helps ensure a stylish crowd of regulars. However, eight years is a long time in bar years and Koba is about to undergo a major transformation.
Presently the entrance doorway, between a couple of retail shops, leads you up a steep flight of stairs to the front 40-seater bar with leather furniture and purple velvet padded 70s style walls. Beyond that lies a cosy Champagne Bar with its chocolate leather banquette seating made more homely by a roaring fire in winter and air-conditioning in summer. But carry on up to The Gods, with its high-beamed ceiling, plush purple furnishings and copper panelling, here you can relax with table service and a choice of eighty well-made cocktails.
Koba has taken over the now empty shop below and this will become a café bar. Upstairs all the bars are being given a facelift so this gracefully aging bar will be thoroughly rejuvenated.
