Once the Scottish outpost of London's Groucho Club, this basement lounge bar and restaurant sits below St Jude's Hotel in an early Victorian townhouse.
The Asian theme decor plays out with a fusion between lurid pink manga cartoon covered walls and calming zen-like slate and bamboo. This meld of styles continues through the Asian, dim sun tapas menu.
The low ceiling and booth layout with comfy banquette seating combine to create a relaxed, loungy feel which grows as you move back further back into the depths of Mama San.
In our experience cocktails are reliably good here and the menu lists some twenty, ranging from out there creations such as the Shortbread Martini (Bison Grass, vodka, Frangelico, coco syrup and pineapple juice) to classics such as the White Lady, Margarita and French 75.
This is not the destination it was back in the Groucho days but this latest incarnation appears to have long term durability.
