Review

Once you sneak behind the black curtain separating the Horse's Mouth from the Uma Uma Ramen restaurant and descend the stairs into the calm, dimly lit Japanese inspired space it's easy to forget the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road up above.

Some will describe this bar as a speakeasy, although we wouldn't classify it as such. Despite the 'hidden entrance' it's easy to find and get into, with no secret passwords or apparent door policy.

Japanese design has a major influence at the Horse's Mouth, from the black minimalist decor to the bar snacks (stingray fins anyone?). The bar seats around 40, including 10 seats at the bar and the rest on surrounding round tables. Lounge music and a quiet atmosphere set the scene.

The cocktail menu is themed around a three course meal, with drinks listed under the headers 'starters, main courses and desserts'. In fact, at first and even second glance it's so convincing that you might wonder if in fact you've been handed the food menu. The Hainanese Chicken Rice delivers just what it says on the tin, with chicken grease infused mezcal and garnished with sticky rice. 'Desserts' include the Apple Pie with apple brandy and spiced apple sauce and our favourite, the Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwich. Unusual, imaginative, adventurous? All of the above.
