From the outside, those strange tessellated designs on Char No. 4's exterior are based on barrel staves, and inside, the lighting above you looks like barrels aglow with the flames of the charring process: this is most definitely a bourbon bar, and if you weren't entirely sure, there are 150 American whiskies on display on the backbar and 150 other types of whisky too. Such is its repute in the field that distillers including Tom Bulleit and Bill Samuels JR are known to visit.
This is a sipping bar, with just a couple of cocktails on the menu. Instead, choose a flight from the menu, or chat to the bartender to design your own flight, with everything priced at 1oz too, to really explore the category.
At the rear is a small restaurant, which has its own in-house smokery - sometimes they have guest chefs in, with one from Proof on Main in Louisville, Kentucky, recently creating dishes designed to pair with specific bourbons. But you can eat Southern barbecue-inspired food at the bar too and complement your bourbon with food like chopped pork sandwich and squash.
