Another night, another dose of Tiki Mayhem in the Northern Quarter. This time it’s Keko Moku (meaning ‘monkey island’) – a teensy tiny venue presided over by the Hawaiian-shirted, huge character that is Lyndon Higginson, with the little space that is left packed full of love and rum.
It does feel a bit like you’ve walked into someone’s garage rather than a bar but it’s so crammed full of tiki paraphernalia and the vibe is so great it doesn’t matter a jot. They’ve really embraced the tiki-spirit with dollar bills stuck to the ceiling, Puffa fish, leis across the bar shelves and more rum than you can shake a swizzle stick at.
The style of the menu again pays homage to one Victor Bergeron but the drinks are well made and inventive. The ridiculous glassware is also good fun – I’m sure some drinks were coming across the bar in vases but there’s the skull mugs and volcano bowls too. This feels like a true locals bar – and once inside you’re in the gang and in for a treat.
