Review By Simon Difford

If you manage to get your name on the list, find the right door and scale the spiral staircase then you've infiltrated Barcelona's most secretive bar.

Mutis is a converted flat which was knocked through into one big space and sound-proofed. The rest of the apartment block contains residents who are getting on with everyday life, which helps create the feel of an illicit party.

The bar takes inspiration from Parisian cabarets and 1920s New York speakeasies. There are red, velvet curtains, a gold ceiling, small black tables and a white piano for the 12:30am entertainment. Mutis' owner is also big into antique markets, which is noticeable right down to the antique faucets in the bathrooms - even the sugar on the bar is stored in an old challis!

The menu has been designed by the head bartender, and it doesn't disappoint. Each cocktail is introduced with a couple of sentences that provide its back story. It's a beautiful read than encompasses classics, modern classics and specific after-dinner cocktails. The food menu was similarly tempting, but if you're just staying for a drink, then at least indulge in the wasabi peas - a phenomenal bar snack!
