The most striking thing about Bar am Lützowplatz is the actual bar itself. The 16 metre counter runs down one side of an extraordinarily long, narrow room. With a curved, mirrored ceiling and mustard coloured walls you’d be forgiven for feeling like you’re sipping a cocktail in a carriage on the Orient Express, rather than a bar in West Berlin.

At the end of the bar is a small seated area which is dominated by a portrait of Chairman Mao. The painting is the only piece of art in the bar, and hangs in an almost shrine-like fashion. It’s a little ironic that it’s only there art for art’s sake. Bar am Lützowplatz is not a communist bar, but in fact a capitalist watering hole for the young, minted, champagne-quaffing crowd in Berlin.

The bar has an impressive cocktail list, and the drinks are well-presented. Sadly though, the ingredients let the cocktails down, and they didn’t taste quite as good as they looked.
