A single railway arch with net curtain-covered windows at either end may not sound particularly promising a setting for a cool lounge bar, but once inside and under the psychedelic ceiling you’ll be suitably impressed by Riva.
Named, rather inexplicably, after the 1970s Italian football star Luigi Riva, the tunnel-like, dimly-lit space is dominated by an oval island bar. Bar stools surround this with tables and banquettes on one side and standing room only on the other.
The extensive menu lists classic cocktails under dry, medium or sweet headings. When ordered, these are well made. The cool, hip crowd also appreciates the Serrano ham, which is finely sliced on a machine at the end of the bar and served with crisp breads and olives.
Riva also has a hidden gem in the form of its walled, decked garden. This is partly sheltered by the rear of the arch and is a remarkably secluded spot.
