Review

This classic Birmingham boozer has been given a new lease of life that has avoided being stripped down into just another gastropub and essentially reclaimed those archetypal elements of a classic pub. The Victoria dates back to the 19th century, and is full of character– patterned carpets, stained glass windows and the shabby appeal of a true British pub.

The upstairs has been converted into a lounge bar, with entertainment – anything from stand-up comedy, to poetry readings and touring bands – performing sporadically throughout the week. Whether you fancy a Sunday roast, a wind-down pint, or some of The Victoria’s cocktails, you’re sure to find something to suit your mood here.

The cocktail menu ranges from Espresso Martinis and Daiquiris to more unusual concoctions such as ‘42nd Wonder of the World’ which combines New Zealand’s finest vodka with strawberries, cucumber, fresh basil and black pepper, or the Morrall Booster – rum with pineapple, Liqor 42 and lime.

This might not be your first stop for a quiet, sophisticated drink, but if you want to go to a real bartenders’ bar with plenty of soul, then The Victoria should be high up on your list.
