Review

The Grenadier is hidden away at the end of an exclusive mews. Unsurprisingly given its name and the red sentry box outside, the pub has a military history: it was originally a mess for the Duke of Wellington's officers. The Iron Duke came here for a last drink before the battle of Waterloo in 1815 and, although the building became a pub three years later, his portrait still stands above the fireplace and a stone from his mounting block remains in the yard. Prints of Guardsmen and other military memorabilia adorn the walls, while the ceiling is covered with money sent by customers from around the world.

Well kept real ale is still served across the original pewter-topped counter and competition-winning Bloody Marys are made to a secret recipe passed from licensee to licensee. This delightful little pub even has its own ghost - an officer who was caught cheating at cards and died after being flogged, and comes to pay his respects in September. The Grenadier is also a haunt for Madonna who once held a post-gig party here.
