Review

Jasper's is a cocktail-driven gastropub named after Jasper O'Farrell, the first surveyor of San Francisco who designed Market Street and is widely recognised as the man who constructed modern day San Francisco. Open from lunch until late night, the restaurant serves beef burgers, fish and chips, and other fairly classic pub fare. The front room is open with walk-in seating around the long bar and a few benches for groups while the back dining area is semi-hidden around the corner. With bartenders and waiters wearing hipster plaid shirts, Jasper's is seeking a hip-casual vibe rather than an old-time cocktail bar look.

The head mixologist is Steve Middler, with an impressive background as a chef and restaurant owner before deciding that bartending was his calling. No surprise then that his cocktail program is designed to highlight natural ingredients. As well as a good selection of traditionally made cocktails, including the classic Boulevardier and a twist on the Manhattan, the bar at Jasper's offers a range of draft cocktails. The cocktail receiving most attention is the Negroni on tap, dispensed from a keg filled with two cases of each of its three ingredients. The rest of the drinks call for an interesting mix of highbrow (sherry, cilantro syrup) and lowbrow (cola, ginger beer) ingredients, keeping the list playful and creative.
