This restaurant and cocktail bar takes its name from a term associated with American Prohibition, and which has even earlier origins dating back to the 1800s when laws first restricted the sale of alcohol. Saloon keepers would charge patrons to see attractions, including animals, and provided complimentary alcoholic drinks, so circumventing the law. Later during Prohibition, speakeasies tended to be high class establishments whereas blind pigs were dive bars.
Gastro pub meets New York Prohibition lounge neatly sums up this Blind Pig's offering and décor. A line of antique cut crystal glassware sparkles while suspended over the bar by fishing wire. The old intricate cornices have been patched and now sit proudly, if a little worse for age, picked out in white against the dark ceiling. The large windows look out onto the street but a clever tinting obscures the view in from outside.
The dining room is separated from the bar and thanks to a talented chef has quickly become a local destination. An owner heavily into his cocktails and happy to dive behind the bar helps drive a standard of mixology that's backed by a good spirits selection. This is a gem of a local's bar complete with pub quizzes.
