If Mexican cuisine is generally still in 'junior school' in the UK (compared to the US, say, and of course Mexico itself) Thomasina Myers' Wahaca concept is one of the better chains. The newer branches have begun to be positioned with distinct bars to the eating spaces, and the Canary Wharf site has a bijou bar on the second floor compared to the large restaurant on the first floor.
It's delightfully makeshift. Glassed-in for colder months, and thrown open to the weather in sunnier seasons, drinks are served from a small bar and you can stand at an old oil drum or sit on outdoor furniture to drink at. A five-strong Margarita list sees drinks shaken up in a tin-and-plastic then 'dumped', ice and all, into chunky glasses - it all feels rather rustic given the soaring metropolis that surrounds, and that's just right for tequila.
Flavoured margaritas are thankfully not super-sweet. There are six longer tequila-based drinks and you can order four blancos, four reposados, five añejos and two mezcals to sip alongside housemande sangrita. Great value too, at £5.95 for a classic Margarita.
