Unless your primary purpose in coming to Bastille is to eat, in fact even if it is to dine, then walk straight through the vast restaurant and it's impressive bar to the altogether more homely Back Room Bar. Its way out back down the long sloping hallway but it's worthy of the trek.
You'll find a large dimly lit, barn-like room with a high exposed beamed ceiling suspending an imposing chandelier. This was formerly an iron foundry and an old beam winch in the centre of the room and two of the original windows have been retained. High chairs and tables dot the room in front of an imposing wall-to-wall dark wooden bar counter. Jazz bands help set the mood and in the summer an outside space makes Bastille even more appealing.
The Cocktail list is as appealing to read and the drinks are to imbibe with clever names and a broad base of ingredients. Add to this, more than 20 wines by the glass and an impressive range of both draught and bottled beers. Remember that huge restaurant out front? So unsurprisingly the bar food is great (try the rabbit pate for a snack).
